Researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia have designed an evidence-based interactive resource to help parents effectively plan and structure supervised practice driving. Based on years of research and collaboration with subject matter experts such as driving instructors, the TeenDrivingPlan Practice Guide helps parents create the right learning environment to develop safe skilled drivers.
Using this free downloadable version of the TeenDrivingPlan Practice Guide and also available as an online version on this site, educators can support parents in their critical role as supervisors of their teens’ driving. Following the TeenDrivingPlan Practice Guide provides new teen drivers and their parents with plenty of quality driving practice in different environments and conditions and an easy way to keep track of their progress.
The Guide includes information and tools from TeenDrivingPlan (TDP). This randomized, controlled trial found that teens with families that followed the TDP program were 65% less likely to make dangerous driving errors during a rigorous on-road assessment than teens with families that could access the usual state-issued program. The TDP families logged more practice in a variety of environments that boosted the driving performance of the teens.
Organized by driving environment, the TeenDrivingPlan Practice Guide includes specific driving goals for each environment, supported with 54 short video tutorials, a Goal Guide, and a Logging and Rating Tool to keep families on track with practice driving. Print these resources to keep in the car or download them to an electronic device.
For parents to be successful in using the TeenDrivingPlan Practice Guide, it’s important that facilitators walk parents through the guide and point out the goals that they think their teens will need to practice the most. Without that reinforcement, parents may not engage and use the resources effectively.
